Long Island City Waterfront

The Long Island City waterfront is absolutely beautiful, completely accessible, easy to navigate and has the most spectacular views of the skyline.   As you look out from the waterfront, whether from any of its parks, restaurants or apartments, you will be completely overwhelmed by what you see. The view of the skyline leaves you breathless,  with thousands of  skyscrapers and high-rises stretching the length of Manhattan, and painting an incredible mural of architectural beauty.

The LIC waterfront itself has  recently  been transformed from an industrial brownfield to a modern greenway, giving opportunity to thousands of New Yorkers and visitors to enjoy the area and the great view. It boasts two gorgeously designed parks with greenways, piers, chairs and benches. They provide the perfect setting for skyline watchers. The waterfront is also home to many restaurants and bars serving international cuisine and drinks.  For the fast growing population of Long Island City, several high-rise buildings, offering great views of the parks, river and skyline, have been built  on the waterfront, and as the remnants of this former industrial area give way to a new and burgeoning community,  another major housing development, Hunter Point South, is already rising on the southern side of the waterfront. Indeed, the entire LIC waterfront  with the skyline as the centerpiece, is no longer just an industrial community, but also a great place to live, a destination for visitors, and arguably  the best place in the world to experience the New York skyline.

Waterfront Parks

There are two absolutely gorgeous parks on the Long Island City waterfront. They are Hunter's Point South Park and Gantry Plaza State Park. Both have been described as 'jewels' on the East River.   On the southern side of the waterfront is Hunter's Point South, while on the northern side is Gantry Park. With their side by side locations and seamless designs, many visitors stroll back and forth between them without ever realizing that they are actually moving from a city park (Hunters Point) to a state park (Gantry Park). Together, the two parks currently occupy approximately 17.5 acres of  waterfront property, but with the Hunters Point South Park still expanding, both parks will cover no less than one mile of riverfront property in Long Island City after all is said and done,

Hunter's Point South and Gantry Park are both stunningly beautiful. From most locations within each park you enjoy unobstructed views of the New York skyline. Designed to showcase the skyline, they provide the perfect setting for mentally transporting visitors from the hustle and bustle of New York to an environment that feels like a resort with a spectacular view. This feeling is further enhanced by the sight and sound of the East River Ferry docking in the Hunters Point South Ferry Terminal also located in the park. The ferry transports both commuters and visitors, across the East River, to and from Manhattan on a three minute journey.

More specifically, Hunter's Point South Park is vibrant and full of life. It has an urban beach with imported sand, a volleyball court, an oval shaped sports field, basketball court, outdoor gym, children’s playground and two nicely laid out dog runs. A restaurant and comfort stations are located in the Ferry Terminal section of the park. Gantry Plaza State Park on the other hand, is an oasis of tranquility and greenery with remarkable character and beauty.  As you first arrive at the park, it reminds you immediately of its industrial past with four gigantic gantries towering over you in the middle of Gantry Plaza. It then lures you into a skyline coma as you venture unto any of the four gorgeous piers and stare breathlessly at the magnificence of the city right before your very eyes.  Finally, it clears your mind of any anxiety as you stroll through the aesthetics of this small but perfectly designed utopia. Both parks are gracefully adorned with elegant trees, and  liberally furnished with stylish yet comfortable benches and chairs.
